“Claire Romaine is a medical student at Tulane University in New Orleans. She plans to pursue a career in pediatric infectious diseases and public health disaster management. Claire received a bachelor’s degree in Human Biology from the University of Virginia in 2018, where her undergraduate honors thesis established a pilot program for community-based participatory research with gender nonconforming adolescents. Claire was also UVA’s inaugural Hannah Graham Memorial Award scholar. This year-long fellowship sponsored French language training, a health policy internship in Geneva, Switzerland, and a summer working as a research assistant in Kigali, Rwanda. In Kigali, Claire contributed to projects related to gastric cancer risk factors and the development of locally-sourced breast prostheses.   Between college and medical school, Claire worked as a population health project manager at Epic, a prominent EMR company. There, she supported large hospital systems through the implementation of value-based analytics tools. She also coordinated a group of pediatricians and social workers from multiple Epic customer organizations to develop pediatric-specific Social Determinants of Health functionality. Claire has also served as medical coordinator at Camp Holiday Trails, a summer camp for children with extraordinary medical needs associated with the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital.   “Working in vaccine safety research and communication is the perfect way to unify my prior training in global health policy and healthcare analytics with my passion for infectious disease and disaster management. Improving the prospective surveillance of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) in children will not only contribute to global biosecurity. At a much more personal level, it will impact families’ yearly experiences of childhood illness. I believe that VIVI’s work of unifying personal, in-home, illness narratives with universal public health goals through well-designed family communication is the best way to combat vaccine hesitancy. I am especially excited to promote the value of family caregiver engagement by bringing ILI measurement tools into the home setting.” Young VIVI member since 2020”.
